RICOLOPEZ'S ART TECHNIQUES:
RICOLOPEZ
uses impasto in an impressionistic naturalism .He uses oil paint in a thick way that creates
emphasis in
texture and color. Up close the painting becomes three dimensional.
To be
able to support impasto
, a canvas has to be strong linen of the best quality and it has to be
prepared the right way with glue size and gesso. RICOLOPEZ uses thick brushes and sharp, strong brush -strokes and he
has used
palette knives for some of his work.

FROM
CANVAS TO PAINTING:
After
supporting the linen canvas with the stretchers RICOLOPEZ uses Rabbit Skin
Glue to cover the canvas.
RICOLOPEZ
primes the canvas with Gesso , then he starts adding color to the canvas .
When the
canvas is dry RICOLOPEZ stretches the linen over the wooden stretchers one
more time to make sure the canvas is not sagging.
Now
RICOLOPEZ starts to draw with charcoal on the primed canvas using as
guide a preliminary charcoal and pencil
drawing of the subject to be painted -a portrait in this case. When
painting a portrait RICOLOPEZ always does three different drawings of the
subject in different positions and lets the person choose the one he/she
likes.

When
the sketches of the drawing are done , RICOLOPEZ
starts to use oil paint with thick brushes in flowing brush-strokes giving
life to his new creation. The portrait is finished and another composition
by RICOLOPEZ brings the model to life.To see the finished portrait go to
